The UK / India Free Trade Agreement (FTA) - What it means for Indian car buyers ...

The UK-India Free Trade Agreement dated 15 July 2026 is for buyers of prestige vehicles in India, and the timing could not be more significant. Now is the time to consider your next prestige car purchase with a trusted vehicle export supplier such as Import Marques. From the date proposed, vehicle import duty on large-engine luxury cars from the UK drops from 110% to 30% — immediately, under a first-year quota of 10,000 vehicles. By year five of the agreement, duty falls further to just 10%, with annual quotas expanding to 37,000 units. This is for UK manufactured vehicles only such as Range Rover, Range Rover Sport, Aston Martin model, Bentley models and Rolls Royce as well.

To put that in real terms: a Range Rover Sport with a CIF value of £80,000 currently attracts £88,000 in import duty. From 15 July, that drops to £24,000. A saving of £64,000 on duty alone.

Crucially, the FTA concessions apply specifically to prestige and luxury vehicles — cars priced below £40,000 remain outside the framework. This is an agreement designed, in practical terms, for exactly the segment Import Marques specialises in: premium British marques including Range Rover, Rolls-Royce, Bentley, Aston Martin, and Land Rover.

One important note for electric vehicle buyers: The FTA does not include duty reductions for electric, hybrid, or hydrogen vehicles in the first five years. Buyers considering a BMW iX, Range Rover Electric, or any other EV should be aware that standard import duties continue to apply until Year 6 of the agreement. Which cars qualify for the reduced FTA duty rate?

The concessional duty rates apply to vehicles substantially manufactured in the United Kingdom. The good news for buyers of British prestige marques is that the most sought-after models qualify comfortably:

Note that the Land Rover Defender model is not produced in the UK but Slovakia so does not qualify for the FTA rates.

Duty rates shown on this site are the confirmed concessional rates under the UK-India CETA, effective 15 July 2026. Quota-based access applies — buyers are advised that we can confirm their vehicle's Rules of Origin eligibility but the current vehicle quota availability needs to be checked with a licensed Indian customs agent at the time of purchase. 1. Submit an Enquiry: Begin by submitting an enquiry on our website. Let us know the vehicle you're interested in and include your contact details (email and phone number)
2. Consultation: Once we receive your enquiry, one of our export consultants will contact you via email and WhatsApp. We'll discuss your preferences, whether you're interested in a new-build factory order or a stock vehicle and guide you through current availability 
3. Secure Your Vehicle: When we find a car you are 100% happy with, we will raise an invoice and collect a deposit to reserve it for you. We accept payment in GBP, USD and EUR
4. Documentation and Export Prep: We will handle all necessary paperwork and documentation, including the required documents needed in India for Customs clearance. 
5. Delivery to UK Port for India: Once the vehicle is ready for collection, it will be securely transported to the UK departure port, loaded onto an insured container and shipped to your chosen Indian port (Kolkata, Mumbai, Chennai, Mundra, etc) on a fully insured C.I.F basis
6. Customs Clearance and Handover: Once the car arrives in India, our local customs clearing agent will manage the import process on your behalf. After customs clearance, you can collect your vehicle from the port and drive it home

As you can see, the UK / India Free Trade Agreement is a massive incentive for prestige car buyers in India. Please note that for this FTA any Electric, Hybrid and Hydrogen vehicles, the import duty of 100% is not changing at all. In Year 6 of the FTA, the rate is being proposed of 10% duty.

HOW WILL THE DUTY REDUCTION AND QUOTA SYSTEM WORK ?
The FTA does not simply reduce import duties for every vehicle without limit. Instead it uses a Tariff Rate Quota (TRQ) system — a fixed number of vehicles each year that qualify for the reduced duty rate. Once that annual limit is reached, additional vehicles attract a higher rate.

In simple terms: first come, first served.

Year 1 — from 15 July 2026:

- Large-engine prestige cars (petrol above 3,000cc / diesel above 2,500cc) 
10,000 vehicles at 30% duty

- Mid-range engine cars (petrol 1,500–3,000cc / diesel up to 2,500cc) 
5,000 vehicles at 50% duty

- Smaller engine cars (up to 1,500cc) 
5,000 vehicles at 50% duty

Total Year 1 allowance: 20,000 vehicles across all categories

Year 5 — from 2031:
All engine categories combined — 37,000 vehicles at 10% duty

The 10,000-unit quota for large-engine prestige cars in Year 1 covers all qualifying UK brands combined — Rolls-Royce, Bentley, Aston Martin, Range Rover, and McLaren together. These are the most sought-after models in India and demand is expected to be significant from day one. Buyers who move early in each quota year secure the concessional rate. Those who enquire later risk the quota being filled and paying a higher rate.

WHAT HAPPENS IF THE QUOTA RUNS OUT ?
Vehicles imported beyond the annual quota do not revert to the old 110% duty. A reduced rate still applies — currently expected to be in the 50–45% range — but it is substantially higher than the concessional quota rate. The gap between in-quota and out-of-quota pricing on a £100,000 vehicle is significant. Getting your order in early is the practical solution.

The good news — the quota grows every year. Even if Year 1 allocation fills quickly, the total quota expands annually, reaching 37,000 units at the full 10% rate by Year 5. The trend is firmly in the buyer's favour over time.
